UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION CONDEMNS SURROGACY AS AN EXPLOITATIVE PRACTICE
In a landmark decision, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on Monday 18th of November that explicitly condemns surrogacy as an exploitative practice, marking a significant step toward upholding human dignity and the rights of vulnerable individuals. Paragraph 16 of the resolution highlights the inherent ethical concerns and exploitation associated with surrogacy, particularly its impact on women and children.
The One of Us European Federation, welcomes this critical recognition by the international community. The condemnation of surrogacy aligns with One of Us’ ongoing efforts to expose the commodification of human life and the exploitation of women and children in surrogacy arrangements.
A Clear Stand Against Exploitation
Surrogacy practices often reduce the human body to a transactional commodity, undermining the intrinsic value of life and the dignity of all individuals involved. The UN resolution emphasizes these grave concerns, calling attention to the exploitative nature of surrogacy, particularly in its commercial forms, where financial inequalities are often exploited to coerce women into participating.
“This resolution represents a milestone in the global fight against the commodification of human life,” said Pablo Siegrist, Vice-president of the One of Us European Federation “The international community is starting to acknowledged the exploitation inherent in surrogacy, reaffirming the fundamental principle of universal inherent human dignity meaning that human beings are not for sale.”
Defending the Vulnerable
Surrogacy not only exploits women but also denies children their inherent right to a stable identity and the bond with their biological mother. By condemning this practice, the UN has sent a strong message against systems that prioritize profit over people and treat children as products of contractual arrangements.
The One of Us European Federation has consistently advocated for the abolition of surrogacy, calling it a violation of Human rights. This resolution provides a powerful platform for future advocacy and policy development aimed at banning surrogacy practices worldwide.
One of Us urges European policymakers to take inspiration from the UN’s resolution and enact stronger legislation to protect women and children from the harms of surrogacy. The Federation also calls on citizens to join this critical cause by becoming One of Us signing in here:
